Speech by Sheikh Abdul Rahman Sudais on the 1st 10 Days Of Dhul Hijjah

Sheikh Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, the esteemed Imam of Masjid al-Haram and President of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, delivered a profound speech on the virtues of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. These days are among the most sacred in the Islamic calendar, offering Muslims worldwide an opportunity for heightened devotion and spiritual reflection.

Sheikh Al-Sudais reminded those intending to offer a sacrifice to refrain from cutting their hair or nails from the beginning of Dhul Hijjah until after the sacrifice, in accordance with prophetic guidance.

The Significance of the First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah

Sheikh Al-Sudais emphasized that the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are unparalleled in their spiritual merit. He referenced the Qur'anic verses:

“By the dawn. By the ten nights.”

— Surah Al-Fajr (89:1–2)

These "ten nights" are widely interpreted by scholars to refer to the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated:

“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari

Sheikh Al-Sudais urged Muslims to seize this period for increased worship and good deeds.

Recommended Acts During These Blessed Days

In his address, Sheikh Al-Sudais highlighted several acts of worship that hold special significance during these days:

Fasting: Observing fasts, especially on the Day of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah), which expiates sins of the previous and coming year.

Prayer and Qur'an Recitation: Engaging in additional prayers and reading the Qur'an to draw closer to Allah.

Takbeer and Dhikr: Frequently reciting phrases like "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest), "Alhamdulillah" (All praise is due to Allah), and "La ilaha illallah" (There is no deity but Allah).

Charity: Giving to those in need, reflecting the spirit of generosity encouraged during this time.

Sacrifice (Qurbani): For those able, offering a sacrificial animal on Eid al-Adha, emulating the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham).

Sheikh Al-Sudais reminded those intending to offer a sacrifice to refrain from cutting their hair or nails from the beginning of Dhul Hijjah until after the sacrifice, in accordance with prophetic guidance.
