Saudi Supreme Court Calls for Crescent Sighting of Dhul Hijjah 1446

The Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has issued a call to all citizens and residents to participate in the observation of the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah 1446.

According to an official statement, the court has requested that the crescent be observed on the evening of Tuesday, 29 Dhul Qadah 1446, which corresponds to 27 May 2025 in the Gregorian calendar. The sighting of the crescent moon will determine the beginning of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and consequently set the dates for the annual Hajj pilgrimage and Eid al-Adha.

The court urges those who observe the crescent—whether with the naked eye or through binoculars—to report their sightings to the nearest court or authorized authorities promptly. Testimonies of sightings will be evaluated in accordance with Shariah guidelines to officially declare the beginning of the new month.

The announcement underscores the significance of Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic faith. It is during this sacred month that millions of Muslims from around the world gather in Makkah for the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam. Additionally, the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah marks Eid al-Adha, a major Islamic festival commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God.

The Supreme Court has also invited individuals with astronomical expertise and those equipped with observation tools to contribute to the effort and support the sighting process.
